A machining centre left running in “auto” mode during an unmanned shift and it suddenly fails. The ballscrew bearing experiences an unforeseen failure, damaging the ballscrew itself and overloading the Z axis drive servo motor, which subsequently burns out. This incident would be classified by NCMT as a “breakdown” under the warranty policy, and the expected cost of making the repair would be approximately £9k.

Without our extended service warranty coverage, this unexpected expense would be payble by the machine user.

A machining centre unexpectedly alarms out and shuts down. The issue is the failure of the rotary scale in the B axis. Despite there being no visible signs of mechanical damage or coolant/oil ingress, we know that it is caused by an internal electrical component failure. The cost to rectify this failure is approximately £11k

 An operator, while manually changing a tool setting data offset, inadvertently alters the tool length figure instead of the turning depth diameter. This mistake leads to a head-on tool collision, causing the spindle front bearing race to break and release the bearings, which seize and burn within seconds. The intense heat distorts and discolours the solid stainless steel faceplate. The spindle and faceplate have to be replaced, at a cost of approximately £36k.

 Without the service extension warranty, this significant expense would have to be paid by the CNC machine user.

While manually changing a tool in a live program, an operator accidentally loads the wrong cutting tool. This error causes the tool to collide with the rotating workpiece at high speed, knocking out the machine’s centre of rotation. The collision severely damages the turret’s internal gearing, and a piece of the broken tooling flies out, damaging the safety window on the operator’s door.
